Five Ways to Globalize Your Classroom with Level Up Village

NicaPhoto3girls

In every Level Up Village course, students in the U.S. are paired with parter students in the developing world in globalized classrooms, including these children at NicaPhoto in Nicaragua. Students follow the same curriculum on both ends of the partnership and collaborate with each other via video message exchange using LUV”s Global Communication Platform.

Educators today have an extraordinary opportunity to inspire authentic global learning by leveraging the 1-1 Digital Learning Environment that is rapidly becoming the norm in schools across the country. With technology at our fingertips, it’s never been easier to connect your class with partners around the world for one-on-one collaboration in the globalized classroom. Here are five ways to globalize your classroom with Level Up Village:

  1. Study endangered species and learn cutting-edge green-screen presentation skills in Global Explorers. In this course, students become environmental detectives and take a virtual field trip to investigate to explore different animal habitats around the world. Together with global partners from a developing country, they then design and create a shared final project: a green screen multimedia video presentation using videos and images of their chosen species.
  2. Create a website with social impact in Global Web Designers. In this course, students team up with global partners to design and create a website focused on global climate change. In addition to learning about hydro, wind, and solar power, they learn to understand trends in global climate change. Moreover, they acquire essential skills in web development by using HTML, CSS and Javascript, while simultaneously learning to problem solve from a global perspective
  3. Energize your language arts class with Global Conversations – Malala Yousafzai. In this course, students in your class and a global partner class read I am Malala and then engage in a guided literature and culture exchange that includes discussions of important themes, such as leadership, access to education and community service. See this video to learn more about the recent pilot of this course at Eastern Middle School in Greenwich, Connecticut, in partnership with students in Pakistan, and these articles in Greenwich Time and Tech Insider.

  4. Develop foreign language skills by connecting with native speakers in Global Language Lab. Available in Arabic or Spanish, this course pairs foreign language students in the U.S. with partners from across the globe for a language and culture exchange for a series of video exchanges on topics such as sports, food, hobbies, travel and career aspirations. 5. Add a 3D Printer to Your School’s Makerspace by offering our Global Inventors course. In this course, students learn to harness the power of 3D printing, one of the most innovative technologies of our time, to engineer solutions to real life problems.  Using Computer Aided Design (CAD), they create, print and 3D print a variety of projects, culminating in a solar-powered light source they co-design with a global partner student from a developing country.
